1020328 Swing 1st Planetary Carrier

The 1020328 planetary carrier is used inside the swing reduction gearbox of selected Hitachi excavators. It supports the planetary gears and keeps them correctly positioned while torque is transferred through the swing reduction system.

The carrier works as a structural part of the planetary stage rather than as an individual gear. Its center geometry, gear support positions and overall alignment directly influence how evenly the planetary gears share the swing load.

Correct fit is especially important during swing acceleration, braking and direction changes, when the gearbox is repeatedly exposed to changing torque loads.

Why Carrier Geometry Matters

The planetary gears depend on the carrier to maintain their correct working position. Even small amounts of wear around a support point can allow one gear to run differently from the others.

When load distribution becomes uneven, tooth contact may concentrate on one side of the gear set. This can increase backlash, create abnormal swing noise and accelerate wear in the surrounding reduction components.

A replacement carrier should therefore match the original component in both external dimensions and internal support geometry.

Inspect the Carrier Before Rebuilding the Swing Gearbox

Check the removed carrier carefully for:

• Cracks or deformation in the carrier body

• Wear around the planetary gear support positions

• Excessive clearance between the gears and carrier supports

• Damage around the center drive area

• Uneven contact marks on the planetary gears

• Metal debris or contamination in the swing gearbox oil

If one gear position is noticeably more worn than the others, the mating gears, bearings and support components should also be checked before reassembly.

Do Not Identify a Carrier by Appearance Alone

Swing carrier assemblies from different reduction stages can look very similar in product photos. Differences in center geometry, carrier height, gear support position and internal drive features can prevent interchangeability.

For older excavators, the installed swing gearbox may also have been replaced during previous repairs. Machine model alone should therefore not be used as the only identification method.

The original carrier, swing gearbox information and machine serial number should be compared together before ordering.
