Product Description
The 423-6434 fuel water level sensor is used in Caterpillar fuel and water separator systems to detect a high water level in the separated fuel. It is commonly used with C6.6 and C7.1 engine applications and on excavators including CAT 312E, 314E, 316E, 318E, 320E, 323E, 324E and 329E series machines.
How the 423-6434 Sensor Works in the Fuel Separator
423-6434 is an active electronic level sensor that uses a capacitive sensing principle rather than a mechanical float. The design has no moving sensing parts and is intended for engine-mounted applications where vibration and elevated operating temperatures are normal.
When water accumulates in the fuel-water separator to the sensor level, the sensor provides the signal used by the machine monitoring system for a water-in-fuel warning. If this warning remains active after the separator has been drained, the sensor, connector and wiring should be checked rather than assuming the fuel system itself has another fault.
For physical comparison, Caterpillar specifies a 9/16-18 SAE O-ring thread, approximately 9.8 inches of wire and a 3-pin Ampseal connector for 423-6434. These details are useful when the old sensor number is damaged or difficult to read.
Check the old sensor for 423-6434 or the earlier 363-5084 reference.
Compare the 3-pin electrical connector and wire length.
Confirm the threaded mounting connection at the fuel-water separator.
Provide the Caterpillar machine model and engine model when requesting a quote.
If the machine has had previous fuel-system repairs, send photos of the installed separator and removed sensor.
Caterpillar uses 423-6434 across a wide range of excavators and other equipment, and the official application list extends beyond the commonly searched C6.6 and C7.1 excavator models. Similar machine families can also use different fuel-filter and water-separator arrangements depending on serial range and engine configuration.
For this reason, the safest ordering method is to combine the sensor part number with the engine model and a photo of the existing installation. This is more reliable than selecting a sensor only because the machine is described as a 320 or 323 excavator.
If the machine displays a water-in-fuel warning, first drain and inspect the fuel-water separator according to normal service procedure. A warning that remains after the separator is serviced may also be related to contamination around the sensor, connector corrosion, damaged wiring or an incorrect electrical connection.
When replacing 423-6434, inspect the O-ring sealing area and electrical connector at the same time. Reusing a damaged seal or contaminated connector can create a new leakage or electrical problem even when the replacement sensor itself is correct.
