Troubleshooting Common PC78-6 Travel Issues


Before investing in a new 21W-60-41201 final drive, we recommend diagnosing the following common Komatsu mini excavator travel faults:


  • Symptoms of Internal Motor Wear (Travel Deviation): First, check your track tension and main pump pressures. If pressure is normal but the excavator steers to one side, swap the main travel hoses left-to-right. If the weakness stays on the same side, the final drive's internal piston group is likely worn.


  • Loss of Auto-Shift (Auto-speed) Function: If the excavator seems stuck in low gear, confirm you are getting proper pilot pressure at the 2-speed port. If pilot pressure is missing, the issue is with the control valve; if pressure is present, the internal 2-speed shifting spool may be contaminated.


  • Gear Oil Overflow from Breather Plug: This is a classic symptom. If hydraulic fluid thins out and overflows the gear oil breather, the internal shaft seal has ruptured. This is almost always caused by a restricted case drain line.



7. Critical Installation & Maintenance Protocols


To validate your 6-month warranty and maximize the lifespan of your new 21W-60-41201 final drive, our technicians recommend strictly observing these protocols:



1. Case Drain Line Clearance (CRITICAL)Before operating the new motor, you must thoroughly blow out and clear the case drain line returning to the hydraulic tank. The back-pressure in the drain line must not exceed 0.2 MPa (2 bar). A restriction will instantly rupture the internal floating seal.


2. Pre-fill the Hydraulic Motor HousingDo NOT start the machine with a dry motor. Prior to connecting the main hoses, pour clean hydraulic oil directly into the uppermost drain port of the motor housing to ensure proper lubrication of the piston group and brass valve plate.


3. Correct Planetary Gearbox LubricationFill the reduction gearbox with approximately 1.2 Liters of SAE 90 or 80W-90 Gear Oil (API GL-5) heavy gear oil. Rotate the drive so one plug is at 12 o'clock and one at 3 or 9 o'clock. Fill until oil weeps from the middle level plug. Do NOT overfill with the typical 4-liter amount found in 20-ton class machines!
